Photo of student aviators at NAS Pensacola standing behind the Ruggles Orientator taken circa 1922. The device was used to teach aviators how to control an aircraft under abnormal conditions. The device was essentially a seat mounted within a gimbal ring assembly, enabling full rotation in all three axes as well as vertical movement.

The back of the photo holds a credit stamp to the U.S. Navy, the date the photo was taken, information on the lab which developed the photo (NAS N. I. San Diego), and an archival summary.

Photo taken in 1922 along the railroad tracks on the western edge of the Balloon Field at NAS Pensacola. Pictured are Marine and Navy personnel assembled for inspection. In the upper right are four teams of horses and at least six open railcars on the track. Bayou Grande is visible at the top of the photograph.

The sailors are using wheelbarrows to move material from left to right while others rake. Despite being taken after World War 1 a small water tower or silo next to the building is still painted in camouflage.
