Aerial photo looking east over the Pensacola lighthouse and NAS Pensacola taken around 1922. Structures are visible in the upper right of the photo. Construction on the lighthouse began in 1856 and it was first lit January 1, 1859. A first-order Fresnel lens was cut and polished by Henri LePaute of Paris, France and was installed and lighted by a single whale oil lamp. A first-order Fresnel lens, cut and polished by Henri LePaute of Paris, France, was installed and lit by a single whale oil lamp. The lighthouse became automated in 1965 and the Keeper's Quarters now houses the Navy's Command Display Center which has exhibits pertaining to the history of the lighthouse and Naval Air Station.
