Show moreA number of researchers have investigated the associations among rumination, worry, depression, eating disorders, and anxiety states; however, few studies have evaluated the interrelationships among rumination, worry, cognitive flexibility, psychophysiological variables, and obsessive-compulsive symptoms. In this thesis, 87 college students' psychological, cognitive, and psychophysiological factors were assessed. They were then presented with a series of 60 emotionally arousing pictures and a relaxation induction with pleasant imagery while psychophysiological measures were collected. Results indicated that participants with low levels of cognitive flexibility and reflective rumination and high levels of worry reported high levels of obsessivecompulsive symptoms and demonstrated a longer temperature habituation time during relaxation induction following the viewing of stressful pictures. Emotional distress levels were significantly predicted by brooding rumination. This study demonstrated that cognitive flexibility is an important construct in understanding obsessive-compulsive symptoms. Additionally, cognitive rumination provides additional predictive utility in this symptom complex, above and beyond worry. Implications for further research in the neurodeficits model of obsessive-compulsive disorder are discussed.

The VAMS and another frequently used mood assessment measure, the Profile of Mood States (POMS), were administered to sixty patients at a headache clinic in Milan, Italy. Both the VAMS and POMS were administered before and after a regularly schedule appointment at the clinic. Multitrait-Multimethod analyses were conducted to assess the validity of each subscale of the VAMS against corresponding scales in the POMS. Analysis concluded that all subscales of the VAMS possessed high test-retest reliability and the "confused," "sad," "angry," "energetic," and "tired" subscales of the VAMS are reliable and valid when administered to a non-English speaking pain population. Given the evidence of strong reliability and validity, the VAMS may be very useful as a clinical diagnostic tool in non-English speaking pain populations.

Significant but modest positive relationships between religiosity and more restrictive sexual behavior patterns have been found by prior researchers. Existing data have also suggested that a higher level of perceived social support is a protective factor against risky health behaviors, including sexual behaviors. Finally, literature has shown that normative perceptions play a role in predicting such behaviors. The current study examined perceived social support, perceived peer norms, and...
Show moreSignificant but modest positive relationships between religiosity and more restrictive sexual behavior patterns have been found by prior researchers. Existing data have also suggested that a higher level of perceived social support is a protective factor against risky health behaviors, including sexual behaviors. Finally, literature has shown that normative perceptions play a role in predicting such behaviors. The current study examined perceived social support, perceived peer norms, and sexual attitudes as mediator variables in the relationship between religiosity and sexual behavior. Data were analyzed from a sample of 364 unmarried male and female undergraduates between the ages of 18 and 25. Results replicated past findings which showed that religiosity is modestly related to more restrictive sexual behavior patterns. However, analysis also revealed that this relationship was mediated by sexual attitudes. These findings suggest that religious commitment is modestly related to more restrictive sexual behavior through the mechanism of increased negative attitudes towards sexuality. Future research could strengthen this literature by exploring the impact of domain-specific social support and through the use of samples that include greater demographic diversity.

- Skinner, Emory Fiske, PALMM (Project)
- Abstract/Description
-
Skinner, born in New York, was employed in the lumbering industry in Michigan, Wisconsin and California, and ran a sawmill in Navada. In 1874, he inspected pine forests in Bagdad, Floridatown, and Ferry Pass, Florida. Between 1874 and 1905, he built a lumbering empire of over 100,000 acres of pinelands in Santa Rosa and Escambia Counties. This autobiography provides an eyewitness account of lumbering in West Florida and the yellow fever epidemics between 1874 and 1905.

White Plume sought to become America's first industrial hemp farmer, planting in 2000, 2001, and 2002. He was supported by tribal law, but received a federal injunction prohibiting hemp farming, in place until 2016. Using ethnographic field methods, I examined his case through participant observation, interviews, talks, and photographs, documenting the 2018 White Plume Victory Celebration and Annual Lakota Pony Races on the Pine Ridge Reservation and answered: How is sovereignty and resilience conceptualized and interpreted by White Plume and the Lakota? How are the Lakota resilient in overcoming historic oppression to enrich their cultural heritage? What role does the National Park Service play in federal-tribal relations within a resiliency context? My findings define the Resilient Warrior and document methods of resiliency against historic oppression and social injustice. These methods include sharing cultural traditions, language revitalization, and asserting sovereignty through practices including plant gathering and hemp farming. I also document evolving NPS policies that expand tribal programs in recognizing and honoring Native Americans and seek to braid Native American and U.S. histories.

Show moreState directors and members of the special education community have expressed increasing concern about the rapid rise in the number of students identified as learning disabled. This issue has arisen because all too often, an increasing number of children have been identified as learning disabled and referred for special education services as a result of the discrepancy model used as a means of identifying children with learning difficulties (National Association of State Directors of Special Education, 2007). At the 2001 Learning Disabilities Summit, sponsored by the U.S. Department of Education, the Response to Intervention (RtI) approach was endorsed as a way to identify students in need of additional interventions and supports and to reduce the number of students referred to special education services. The Individuals with Disabilities Education Improvement Act of 2004 (IDEA, 2004) intersects with the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001 (NCLB), and these two pieces of legislation set the stage for the RtI approach to special education eligibility and school improvement (Cummings, Atkins, Allison, & Cole, 2008). This dissertation demonstrates how the Okaloosa County School District (OCSD) schools that have implemented an RtI reading comprehension methodology called the Florida Assessment for Instruction in Reading (FAIR) affect reductions in student referrals to special education services throughout the school district. This RtI approach is being explored for its usefulness as a systematic way to ensure that students experiencing educational difficulties receive timely, effective support and that students with learning disabilities (LD) are identified earlier (Gresham, 2002; Learning Disabilities Roundtable, 2002, 2005; National Research Council, 2002; President's Commission on Excellence in Special Education, 2002).

Show moreThe Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill in 2010 significantly impacted the planktonic ecosystem of the northern Gulf of Mexico. A key element of this ecosystem is the bacterioplankton. They are the base to the food web and were the primary agents of oil degradation. It has been hypothesized that exposure to oil and or dispersants may change microbial community structure by selecting for those strains capable of utilizing oil carbon while selecting against others by toxic effects of oil and or dispersants. To view spatial and temporal variability in bacterioplankton community response, surface and near bottom water samples were collected at two sites, offshore Choctawhatchee Bay, Florida, in winter (December 2012) and summer (June 2013). Bioassays were performed on 1 L water samples amended with oil, oil and Corexit, and Corexit alone, and compared to an un-amended control. Samples were incubated at in situ temperatures for two days in the dark and 16S rRNA genes were amplified and sequenced. Community structure shifts and production changes were associated mostly with the oil treatment, while Corexit alone had the smallest effect. Trends for community response were more significantly influenced by collection site parameters, namely season and depth, than by treatments.

Show moreThis dissertation in practice (DIP), responsive evaluation (RE) explored relationships of the Faulkner Academic Math Excellence (FAME) Laboratory characteristics and specific perceptions of students enrolled in developmental mathematics education courses at a rural community college in Alabama's southeastern region. This program evaluation examined information surrounding the effectiveness of the FAME Lab program and service activities housed within a two-year community college. The study explored perceptions of students within a community college developmental mathematics education program relative to three areas of focus: (a) students' expressed access and use of the FAME Lab program services, (b) students' perceptions of the influence of the FAME Lab program services relative to academic performance levels, and (c) students' perceived value of the FAME Lab program relative to successes in developmental math courses. The researcher performed an extensive review of the literature and identified a critical problem of low numbers of students successfully completing developmental mathematics courses among colleges across the United States as a pervasive challenge, uniquely identified within community colleges and evidenced by 96% of colleges across the country requiring remediation courses, primarily in mathematics (Butrymowicz, 2017). The participants in the study were community college developmental education students and faculty of the community college. A potential limitation of this study includes researcher bias. The magnitude of the problem identified in the literature provided the impetus for the investigation and aligned with the nature of the meaning and purpose for using the DIP, explicitly recognizing an existing problem in practice and performing a study aligned with the need acknowledged by the problem in practice. The Faulkner Academic Math Excellence (FAME) Laboratory program exemplifies and aligns with the type of intervention programs reflective of the remediation programs that colleges across the United States are utilizing to curb or remedy the problem of low numbers of students successfully completing developmental mathematics courses. The researcher communicated with the Vice-President of Instruction and the Math Division Chair and received approval to conduct the DIP study. The researcher created a questionnaire for the student participants and conducted a RE of the FAME Lab program to respond to the problem defined for investigation. The current study provided a practitioner approach to examining the problem by incorporating the use of the RE model (Stake, 2014) to discern the problem within a focused setting, explicitly utilizing the FAME Lab program within a two-year college located in the southeastern region of the United States. The use of the RE protocol provided the researcher with strategies to inform results focused on three areas of consideration: (a) the examination of program activities rather than program goals or intents; (b) the acquisition of students' needs, reactions, and information rather than college leaders' intentions or purposes; and (c) the reporting of differing perspectives in determining the success and failure of the program. Based on the researcher's critical use of the RE protocol, a 12-step implementation plan for the FAME Lab program to assist students in attaining success within developmental mathematics was provided to college officials and are is provided for consideration by other developmental math programs at colleges across the United States. These 12 considerations, presented in Chapter 5, coupled with additional discussions of study results, add to the body of literature supporting students' preparation for entering college mathematics programs, a practitioner problem pervasive in colleges across the United States. The study will inform and advance the professional practice by informing the implementation of developmental mathematics education for students who do not complete developmental mathematics courses successfully.
