Show moreThis study examines the relationship between high school efforts at post-secondary preparation for college bound students and the expectations of college and university admissions personnel. The Advanced Placement (AP) teachers and administrators at a rural Northwest Florida high school were administered a quantitative survey in order to collect their perceptions on which strategies and methodologies were most appropriate in preparing high school students for both AP exams as well as preparation for college. The results of this survey were then shared with admission staff from a college and university located in the same county, and their responses collected qualitatively. The results demonstrated that while there were some similarities of expectation between the two groups, there were also areas of non-academic preparation, such as self-advocacy and understanding of college procedure and terminology that were not determined as pertinent to the high school personnel. The study determined a need for increased communication between the college, university, and high school groups in order to best meet expectations of college preparation at the post-secondary level.

Investigation of early adolescent motivational goals within gender and racial groups in achievement settings provides guidance for developing procedures to promote physically active lifestyles. The Achievement Goal Questionnaire-Physical Education (Todorovich & Anderegg, 2008) survey was used to research student motivation in the physical education context using the 2 x 2 framework of achievement goal theory (Baranik, Barron, & Finney, 2007; Elliot & McGregor, 2001). Middle school physical education students (437, age 11 to 16, M = 12.5, SD = 1.15) of diverse racial groups and gender participated in the study. Achievement goals of mastery-approach, mastery-avoidant, performance-approach, and performance-avoidant were compared between gender and among racial groups. There was no significant difference in achievement goals among the groups.

Show moreThe United States has a severe teacher shortage, especially in inner-city schools and in the areas of mathematics, science, and special-needs. One answer is to hire teachers who have completed the Troops to Teachers (T3) program; the T3 program's mission is (a) to assist qualified veterans through the teacher certification process, usually through alternative certification programs and (b) to assist the T3 teacher find a teaching position. However, does prior military training equip individuals with skills that translate into success within the classroom for both the teacher and the teacher's students, as evidenced by the most important factor of all: increased student achievement? Is the T3 program a genuine source of highly qualified teachers, or are T3 teachers actually the short straw? In a 2005 national survey, almost 90% of the T3 supervisors reported that they think the T3 teachers they supervised are more effective teachers than traditionally trained teachers with the same years of experience. However, would other T3 supervisors agree with that assessment? The research from this dissertation answers that question.

Show moreThe goal of Study I was to address the current gap in research concerning the lack of validation studies for rated stimuli. The mean ratings from two samples for 192 words were calculated. Results indicated that the rating means between samples were positively related (r = .96, p < .01). If rated stimuli are not substantiated, stimuli would become subjective and lose objectivity as tools of measurement. The first goal of Study II was to address the lack of collections for rated everyday objects. A total of 180 everyday objects were compiled and rated according to valence, arousal, and survival. The second goal was to examine how these dimensions were related. A significant change between Model 1 (R 2= .05, F (1,178) = 8.90, p <.01) and Model 2 (R2 = .42, F (2,177) = 64.71, p <.01) indicated a curvilinear relationship between arousal and valence. Results also indicated a positive relationship for arousal and survival (r = .17, p < .05) but indicated no relationship between valence and survival (r = .04, p = .64). Compiling collections of stimuli, examining how dimensions are related, and investigating if ratings compare across samples are important endeavors for the field of psychology.

- Abstract/Description
-
Little skates, Leucoraja erinacea, inhabit cold-water habitats where temperatures approach the freezing point of seawater, yet little is known about this species' thermal ecology. I quantified critical thermal maxima (CTMaxima) and minima (CTMinima) and determined the thermal niche of little skates from Woods Hole, Massachusetts. Fish acclimated at 5.3, 10.5, 15.0, or 15.8C exhibited respective CTMaxima of 24.4, 28.1, 28.0, or 27.0C, and CTMinima of -3.1, -1.9, 0.6, or -0.4C. A thermal...

A thermal tolerance polygon from laboratory data revealed an area of 522C2 the second smallest measured in a batoid and a limited acclimation range of 18C. The thermal niche is dominated by intrinsic tolerance, and a low acclimation response ratio (~0.3C per 1C change in acclimation temperature), limiting little skate acclimation adjustments to no more than 5.5C. My data suggest that little skates are an obligate cold-water species that may not fare well under warming sea temperatures.

Largely, the dilemmas that the characters in each piece experience remained unsolved as a means by which to access and explore experience rather than offering simple resolutions. These characters start out complicated, and their experiences only leave them more so. The collection takes the form of two halves: "Compunction" and "Revulsion." Within each section, thematic conversations take place between small works with insular content. "Buck Granderson's Pond" and "Debride" are two such works, and the conversation between these two pieces centers on the things fathers teach their sons, exploring the ways in which sons reject and accept their father's lessons. The rest of the collection places other pieces in similar conversations, offering various viewpoints on thematic material that serves as a throughline for stories with vastly varying subject matters.

Show moreThe purpose of this study was to explore the knowledge, beliefs, and fears of African American women about contracting HIV/AIDS with the aim of identifying any common themes of these variables. I used these findings to create recommendations for education and prevention strategies that are crucial for HIV/AIDS risk-reduction behaviors among African American women and teenage girls. Ten African American women participated in the case study. To provide a focus for the study that would achieve the stated research goals, 5 research questions which aligned with a modified AIDS/HIV Questionnaire and AIDS/HIV Risk Assessment Interview were used. The findings from the study revealed that African American women are at the highest risk for exposure to and infection with the HIV virus. One of the main implications of these findings is that while African American women appear to be knowledgeable about HIV/AIDS to a certain degree, some continue to engage in high-risk sexual behaviors. African American women are becoming infected with the HIV virus and dying of AIDS at epidemic rates. The information from the 10 African American women participants in this study reinforces the seriousness for understanding how African American women are becoming one of the most affected groups for contracting HIV/AIDS. Today, for many African American women, sexual encounters and relationships with men who are drug users, living in and out of prison systems or are living on the down low, continues to increase the number of Black women becoming infected.

Show moreChildhood discipline has received considerable empirical attention over the last several decades. The largest proportion of this literature revolves around the use of physical punishment strategies. Other disciplinary techniques such as reasoning with the child have attracted far less consideration from the scientific community. Research has focused primarily on identifying trends in specific discipline strategies. Parental age has been investigated to determine potential generational influences, though these results remain somewhat unclear. Changes in the stimuli used to collect data on discipline may serve to resolve some of the ambiguity. Recent innovations in media delivery provide researchers opportunities to employ stimuli that may have been previously limited by technology and could elicit more accurate responses from participants. The purpose of this study was to determine the impacts of participants' age and media type on responses to child misbehaviors. Participants completed an online, computerbased Parenting Strategies Survey (PSS) which was developed for this study. Two versions of the PSS were developed, one containing five video vignettes and the other containing five equivalent text-only vignettes. Open-ended responses were coded by the type of discipline endorsed in each vignette and compared according to age and media type.

Experimental results validated that one translucent zone was deposited in spines and rays during winter/early spring; however, fin rays proved to be less reliable than spines for age estimation (n = 27). Spines collected from fish (n = 2,391) sampled in the northern Gulf of Mexico between 2003 and 2010 were sectioned and aged by two independent readers via counts of translucent zones. Marginal increment analysis verified that a single translucent zone was formed in spines during winter/early spring. A von Bertalanffy growth function was fit to the entire data set [Lt = 521 (e (0.274*(t+0.12))], as well as by sex, fishery, and region. Results from a three-way analysis of variance indicated no significant difference in size at age between sexes, but fishery and region effects were significant. However, a significant interaction between region and fishery effects confounded interpretation of main effects and precluded inference about regional growth differences given that differences in selectivity among region-specific predominant fisheries may have resulted in observed regional differences in size at age. Overall, study results indicate dorsal spines can be used to age gray triggerfish accurately, and that aging data may be useful to estimate growth or as inputs to age-structured stock assessment models.

Show moreInexperienced and poorly trained Air Traffic Control Specialists (ATCSs) contribute to aircraft accidents and other serious aviation mishaps, which negatively impact human safety, the environment, government and personal property, and the efficient and smooth operation of the National Airspace System (NAS). The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) can help remedy this problem by ensuring that ATCSs receive academic and simulator competency-based training. The purpose of this qualitative exploratory case study was to understand how ATCSs at an air traffic facility in the southeastern region of the United States (U.S.) described their experiences with the ATCoach simulation training (ATCoach) in developing job-related competencies. I employed Bloom et al.'s (1956) taxonomy of the cognitive domain and its six classifications (knowledge, comprehension, application, analysis, synthesis, and evaluation) to frame and align the study's research questions and interview questions to determine if five ATCSs perceived simulation as a valuable instructional method. Participants revealed that the ATCoach experiences is a valuable instructional method for enhancing ATC professionals' knowledge and skill levels by preparing them to transfer previous knowledge to practice in dayto-day ATC operations and improve their judgment, critical thinking, and decision-making skills--not their self-confidence. However, the simulator's physical fidelity limitations had an adverse influence on participants' learning experience. The findings, therefore, indicate ATC knowledge does not necessarily occur during the ATCoach but instead during previous classroom learning or experience. Future research should evaluate the entire ATC training program taking a learner from Certified Professional Controllers in Training (CPC-IT) status to Certified Professional Controllers (CPC).

Show moreApproximately 50 years ago, Blacks were refused the right to sit down and receive service at lunch counters in most variety stores, drug stores, department stores, and restaurants in the South (National Association for the Advancement of Colored People [NAACP], 1962). On February 1, 1960, four young Black men of North Carolina Agricultural & Technical State University (NC A&T) defied this prejudiced system by sitting down at an all-White Woolworth lunch counter and demanding to be served (Dykeman & Stokely, 1960). The press reported the incident, which immediately empowered other young students across the country to take a stand by sitting-down (Dienstfrey, 1960). Within just two months, sit-ins spread to over 60 Southern cities ("Dixie Negroes," 1960). Although Pensacola, Florida, became involved in the national sit-in movement just months after the Greensboro Four's demonstration ("Klansmen Want Sheriff," 1960), little of this history was known since most of the lived experiences remained undocumented prior to this study. This study addressed the role of the NAACP Youth Council's (YC) civil rights protests on desegregating the lunch counters of Pensacola, Florida. By implementing Busha and Harter's (1980) methods of historical inquiry, data were collected through archival research, site-based research, and interviews. Data were then analyzed and triangulated. While archival sources were organized to provide a chronological framework for the study, site-based data provided a geographical framework for the study. Interviews then provided personal first-hand emotions and experiences of individuals in the social and political setting. The results of this study are a detailed account of how protests were organized, sustained, and implemented in Pensacola.

Within this framework, I explore the lived experiences of one ordinary man who had the courage to become an agent for change, who by his actions changed history. His story suggests that activists must possess vision and passion and be willing to risk loneliness and rejection if they are to be successful agents for change.

Show moreThe purpose of this quantitative study was to analyze relationships between instructors' self-efficacy and their intent to use synchronous technology in online environments. Both traditional, brick-and-mortar universities as well as for-profit, fully online universities might benefit from this research study because this study is about the adoption of technology innovations. Recent trends indicated that more technological innovations led to the development of higher-speed computers with larger-capacity hard drives. In turn, high-speed computers with large storage capacities allowed online colleges to offer education to remote students. Both online and traditional universities have developed ways to recruit and retain students. Many universities now incorporate audio, video, and picture illustrations into their online courses in order to keep the course materials up-to-date and attractive to students. Not all universities, however, conduct research to determine the best strategies to motivate instructors to use technologies to teach online courses. This ex post facto research focused on factors that might influence university faculty members' perceptions regarding the use of synchronous technology in teaching online classes. The results of the study could not confirm the correlation because the study violated assumptions of Pearson's correction r. However, the research added to the current literature in online learning.

Educators employed in juvenile justice education programs enter the field without benefit of professional teacher preparation to work in the environment. College and University teacher preparation programs are designed to prepare prospective teachers for employment in a K-12 public school, private, or charter school, classroom. New employee preservice orientation is the primary method of preparing newly hired juvenile justice teachers to work within the setting and assume classroom instructional responsibility. Ongoing inservice training is intended to enhance skills and competencies. Voluntary juvenile justice teacher survey respondents suggests that current college and university teacher preparation programs, new employee pre-service orientation, and ongoing inservice training programs need to be redesigned as part of the effort to retain teachers in the juvenile justice system.

In order to make valid inferences about what students know and can do, it is crucial to understand the consequences of low and high stakes in testing contexts. As a result, with a sample comprised of 49 eleventh grade students enrolled in Saraland High School, this study indicates that relationships between student performance on state-mandated testing programs in Alabama and grades earned in corresponding mathematics courses exist. Through regression analyses, it was determined that grades earned in mathematics classes are predictors of scores earned on the state-mandated tests. Additionally, in this study, the sample data revealed that student achievement did not increase as the individual consequences associated with the test increased. Rather, student achievement on the state-mandated tests was consistent with the overall mathematics achievement levels demonstrated in the classroom.

Show moreIn the world of optimization, network optimization problems are considered fundamental to the practice. The work presented here focuses on the similarity constrained k shortest paths problem (SCKSPP) its formulation, and subsequent analysis. The formulation addresses several deficiencies which are present in prior works, and the analysis focuses on addressing major topics of feasibility and optimality which are not present in prior works. SCKSPP focuses around finding k simple paths from source to sink nodes while maintaining a pairwise dissimilarity. The purpose of this paper is to develop an underlying theory behind the SCKSPP to guide the development of an efficient solution method. The work itself is entirely theoretical; we give properties which use graph connectivity to describe the existence of feasible solutions, we demonstrate how objective function behavior affects uniqueness of the optimal solution, as well as other properties regarding feasibility and optimality. Furthermore, we show how specific graph structures allow smaller less computationally intensive problems to be solved, and then extrapolated to form optimal solutions of the larger problems. We also give several examples of similarity measures that incorporate context-specific constraints into already existing similarity constraints.

This thesis investigated Fort Hampton, an American military installation established in 1809 near the Elk River, in present-day Limestone County, Alabama. Fort Hampton was constructed to remove settlers from Chickasaw lands prior to the cession of 1816. Show moreThis thesis investigated Fort Hampton, an American military installation established in 1809 near the Elk River, in present-day Limestone County, Alabama. Fort Hampton was constructed to remove settlers from Chickasaw lands prior to the cession of 1816. This was a short-lived, but significant era of Anglo and Native American habitation in northern Alabama: one in which the American government seemingly protected the Native American cause. This thesis is the first combination of historical sources and archaeological data in the documentation of Fort Hampton. Fort Hampton's location was formally identified, and Fort Hampton was compared with other forts to better understand its place in the history of settlement in the Southeast. Interpretation of Fort Hampton's material and spatial data from an interregional interaction perspective revealed that it had a focused military objective, limited interaction with the Chickasaw, and was a representation of American power in the frontier where the government hoped to gain control. Artifact patterning confirmed the fit of Fort Hampton's material culture with other frontier sites. Important recommendations were identified for the use of artifact patterning. Specifically, knowledge of site condition, site formation, and the identification of previous recoveries are crucial to the proper use of artifact patterns.
