Show moreThis research, conducted in a Northwest Florida Title I elementary school, focused on implementation issues regarding the district's recently adopted Response to Intervention (RTI) process. The purpose of this study was to answer the question: "What experiences do school-based professionals have with the newly implemented RTI process?" This study further focused on RTI implementation issues as teachers endeavored to apply RTI in an effort to improve instructional delivery practices to low-achieving students. The determination of the implementation issues and the explanation of the teachers' experiences were done through a qualitative content analysis of focus groups, document review, and follow up interviews. Relevant implementation themes include (a) training, (b) parental involvement, (c) materials, (d) strategies to implement, (e) additional assistance, (f) sufficient time in classroom, (g) RTI documentation, and (h) characteristics of RTI. The results of this study should be used to further determine the effectiveness of the process used to implement RTI.

Show moreIn this qualitative study, I (a) examined school administrator perceptions of managing student behavior, (b) evaluated their perceptions of district policies and practices, and (c) represented their reports of actions taken in conflict to district policy. Data were generated through interviews with 6 high school administrators, the collection of youth arrest reports over a 3-year period, the collection of district policy documents, and the creation of personal journal entries. Results indicate that (a) administrators perceive parent, student, and teacher attitudes as the primary challenge to managing student behavior; (b) administrators believe that additional disciplinary resources and curricular changes will engage more students in the learning process; (c) administrators hold diverse beliefs regarding district disciplinary policies; and (d) actions most often taken by administrators align with the district disciplinary policy.

- Abstract/Description

This quantitative experimental study used a one-group pretest-posttest design to examine the possible effects of SuccessMaker, a computer software reading program, on the Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test (FCAT) reading scores of level-1 and level-2 sixth-grade middle school students. Data were gathered from the participants’ FCAT reading scores at the beginning of their sixth-grade academic year (pretest, 2005) and again after the application of the SuccessMaker program (posttest, 2006)...
Show moreThis quantitative experimental study used a one-group pretest-posttest design to examine the possible effects of SuccessMaker, a computer software reading program, on the Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test (FCAT) reading scores of level-1 and level-2 sixth-grade middle school students. Data were gathered from the participants’ FCAT reading scores at the beginning of their sixth-grade academic year (pretest, 2005) and again after the application of the SuccessMaker program (posttest, 2006) at the close of their sixth-grade year. The data was collected from one dependent sample utilizing the 47 participants using two sources: the time spent on the computer using the SuccessMaker reading program and b) the two categories of FCAT reading scores which were the achievement level scores and the mean scores for the developmental scale scores (DSS) portion, respectively. Two research questions were addressed. The Pearson r test was used to analyze the amount of time students spent using SuccessMaker (independent variable) and the FCAT reading achievement scores (dependent variable). The results indicated there was no significance between the two variables. The paired-samples t-test was used to compare the mean scores between the FCAT reading DSS pre- and post-test (2005 / 2006). The results indicated a significant increase between the pre- and post-test FCAT reading DSS mean scores.

Show moreThe goal of this study was to ascertain the perceptions held by prekindergarten and general education kindergarten teachers in a northwest Florida school district toward early literacy skills perceived as critical for successful participation in a general education kindergarten setting for children with mild disabilities. The researcherdeveloped survey, Kindergarten Early Literacy Skills Survey, was administered to 21 prekindergarten and 28 kindergarten teachers. Results indicated a statistically significant difference between prekindergarten and kindergarten teachers’ perceptions. However, when forced to rank the top 5 critical skills needed for success, both groups of teachers chose the same 5 skills, but in a different order. Results of this dissertation demonstrate the need for teachers to discuss their values related to the transition process, as well as alignment of the prekindergarten and kindergarten curriculums.
