Show moreThe study evaluated application of the Florida growth model accountability method for (a) low-income students compared to their more advantaged peers and (b) high-poverty schools compared to low-poverty schools. Separate three-year growth trajectories were calculated for reading and mathematics proficiency. Growth trajectories were calculated for three cohorts of elementary school students and chi-square tests of independence were conducted. Application of the growth model was evaluated separately for the first and second years of the growth trajectory because the Florida growth model method considers each year individually. Longitudinal assessment of reading and mathematics proficiency based upon the growth model was also conducted. The growth model calculation was found to be more beneficial for low-income students and high-poverty schools compared to higher-income students and low-poverty schools. The growth model was not found to provide a reliable measure of longitudinal growth. Limitations of the study were presented and recommendations were made for future research.
