Summary:
|
Photo of Camp Saufly on Santa Rosa Island, across from Pensacola Bay, taken August 9, 1918. The camp was established as a temporary training base in the summer of 1918 where "aerial gunnery instructions could be carried on without danger to the neighborhood." By November 1918 the walled tents were replaced by wood buildings to include a mess hall, gunnery, armory, etc. All seaplanes and personnel, except night watchmen, returned to NAS Pensacola at night. Visible at far right above the tents is Burgess N-9 Bureau Number A-2428. The camp was named in honor of Lt. Richard C. Saufley, Naval Aviator #14, who was killed at NAS Pensacola in 1916. |
