Summary: | Aerial photo looking south over the Pensacola Lighthouse taken circa 1922. Construction on the lighthouse began in 1856 and it was first lit on January 1, 1859. A first-order Fresnel lens, cut and polished by Henri LePaute of Paris, France, was installed and lit by a single whale oil lamp. The lighthouse became automated in 1965 and the Keeper's Quarters now houses the Navy's Command Display Center which has exhibits pertaining to the history of the lighthouse and Naval Air Station. | |
