The letter relates that the Klan had helped elect their candidate for city commissioner by "keeping quiet and voting." The letter goes on to say that Wentworth had not allowed his men to publicly support their candidate. Some of the men wanted to go to the polls in robes and helmets, but Wentworth would not allow this. "This is not my idea of doing things and I have almost convinced the most skeptical ones that we will not do this kind of work." Letter reports that many former members are wanting to reinstate and "those whom we think are worthy we will urge to come back, some whom we are better off without we will not encourage to come back." Wentworth tells Phillips that nominations will be held the next week and that he will not accept any position. He has served for 2 years and that he now needs to "build my business up and better support my family." And "it is impossible for me to continue to serve the Order in this office and stay in business, and as the business is my bread and butter and also my family's I must not sacrifice it further."
