U.S. Navy Coal Barge 214 with an aircraft catapult is moored on the opposite side of the Basin.The largest of the three small buildings at the end of the Basin in front of the Coal Barge is Building 144, used to house engine test stands. The large building with arched windows is Building 38, a machine shop.

Photo of a temporary barracks at NAS Pensacola taken sometime between 1917 and 1918. The crowded cots and lack of overhead lighting indicate this may be a temporary quarters. Two sailors can be seen in the photo as well as multiple blankets and boots. On April 6, 1917 Pensacola was still the only naval air station and housed 38 naval aviators, 163 enlisted men trained in aviation support, and 54 fixed-wing aircraft. On April 6, 1917 Pensacola was still the only naval air station and housed 38 naval aviators, 163 enlisted men trained in aviation support, and 54 fixed-wing aircraft. Two years later, by the signing of the armistice in November 1918, the air station had 438 officers and 5, 538 enlisted personnel.

View of hangars at NAS Pensacola taken between mid-March and Mid-November 1918. At the left is Curtiss R-6, BuNo A-176, which was received on July 3, 1917 and Struck off Charge May 31, 1922. Also at the left is the Curtiss H-12 Flying Boat, BuNo A-722, was received at NASP on March 12, 1918 and Struck off Charge November 16, 1918 with just 339 hours of flight time. Sailors and personnel can also be seen milling about the base.
