Aerial photo looking east over the Pensacola lighthouse and NAS Pensacola taken around 1922. Structures are visible in the upper right of the photo. Construction on the lighthouse began in 1856 and it was first lit January 1, 1859. A first-order Fresnel lens was cut and polished by Henri LePaute of Paris, France and was installed and lighted by a single whale oil lamp. IN 1965 the lighthouse was automated so it no longer required the Keeper or Coast Guard personnel to live at the site. The...

The top of the battery can be seen and a Navy man can be seen on the right hand side wandering across the sand. The battery, formerly known as Battery San Antonio when under Spanish control, was completed in 1797.
