The sketch showcases the officer's quarters and a man walking down a dirt road while a woman keeps a child out of the way of a racing carriage. The artist's name appears in the bottom right of the sketch but was cut off when the sketch was framed against a white background at some point during it's lifetime. The quarters were built in 1874 in the Italianate style. Three-storied, the tan brick home with a hipped roof and belvedere is encircled by a two-tiered screened veranda. The previous Commandant's Quarters, built on the same site in 1826, was burned by the Confederate Army in 1862. The quarters are on the National Register of Historic Places.

Abstract/Description

Sketch of Central Avenue on the Navy Yard, Pensacola created around 1875. The sketch looks south from the Commandant's Quarters towards the water. Three men converse while wandering away from the audience down a path lined with trees. Two cannonball pyramids flank the road which looks textured to be either cobblestone or dirt. Central Avenue ran north-south through the center of the Navy Yard from the Commandant's Quarters on North Avenue to Central Wharf on Pensacola Bay.
