Construction on the lighthouse began in 1856 and it was first lit January 1, 1859. A first-order Fresnel lens was cut and polished by Henri LePaute of Paris, France and was installed and lighted by a single whale oil lamp. A first-order Fresnel lens, cut and polished by Henri LePaute of Paris, France, was installed and lit by a single whale oil lamp. The lighthouse became automated in 1965 and the Keeper's Quarters now houses the Navy's Command Display Center which has exhibits pertaining to the history of the lighthouse and Naval Air Station.

The pilots can be seen smiling and waving at their photography escort in the first and fourth photographs. The Model H-16, introduced in 1917, represented the final step in the evolution of the Model H design, with longer-span wings, and a reinforced hull. The H-16s were powered by Liberty engines in U.S. Navy service and remained in service for some years after the war, most receiving engine upgrades to more powerful Liberty variants.
