In Pensacola, Florida, there are many conservative residents who object to the presence of LGBTQ+ members in the community despite the long, rich history of relative LGBTQ+ tolerance. Due to the outward display of intolerant behavior, many LGBTQ+ people question their ability to safely express their sexual orientation and gender identity. Due to the outward display of intolerant behavior, many LGBTQ+ people question their ability to safely express their sexual orientation and gender identity. This paper explores the primary data on main stressors that affect the perception of safety among the LGBTQ+ community in the Pensacola area as well as the mental health consequences linked with the stress of feeling unsafe. Data was gathered through participant observation and semi-structured interviews. I hypothesize that the LGBTQ+ community in Pensacola is more likely to have poor mental health and this inequity is linked to discrimination and feeling unsafe.

- VIRTUALLY REPRESENTATIVE?: EXAMINING CONGRESSIONAL WEBSITES AS A VEHICLE FOR CONSTITUENT COMMUNICATION.
- Author
- Hayden, Jessica Meghan, Evans, Jocelyn, Tankersley, William, Cuzan, Alfred G., University of West Florida
- Abstract/Description
-
Democratic theorists focus on the character of representation (Pitkin, 1967) and the types of representation provided by Members of Congress (Mansbridge, 2003). Representational scholarship has examined communication and representation from the vantage points of Member representational style (Fenno, 1978), committee participation (Hall, 1996), floor voting, and constituent policy congruence (Miller & Stokes, 1963). Yet, despite the Internet's potential to transform political dialogue ...
Show moreDemocratic theorists focus on the character of representation (Pitkin, 1967) and the types of representation provided by Members of Congress (Mansbridge, 2003). Representational scholarship has examined communication and representation from the vantage points of Member representational style (Fenno, 1978), committee participation (Hall, 1996), floor voting, and constituent policy congruence (Miller & Stokes, 1963). Yet, despite the Internet's potential to transform political dialogue (Schlozman et al., 2010), the field of congressional studies has largely neglected the impact of virtual public space on representational behavior. Of the studies addressing this impact, none examine how the Internet is shaping information exchanges from constituent to Member or how the Internet might be strategically used by Members to direct constituent correspondence. The purpose of this study is to address this gap in the scholarship by assessing the quality of facilitation of communication flowing from constituent to the Member on Member websites, or the Member's online accessibility. I code Member websites in 2012 to capture online accessibility and conceptualize four modes of Member accessibility: delegate accessibility, bureaucratic liaison accessibility, district accessibility, and email accessibility. I use logistic and OLS regression analysis to capture the relationship between Member-level and district-level predictors of a Member's online accessibility.

- VIRTUE LOST: UTILIZING PREVIOUSLY EXCAVATED COLLECTIONS TO STUDY THE RED LIGHT DISTRICT OF PENSACOLA, FLORIDA.
- Author
- Rodgers, Jacqueline Leigh, Benchley, Elizabeth D., Carroll, Norine, Mitchell-Cook, Amy M., Gougeon, Ramie A., University of West Florida
- Abstract/Description

Pensacola's historic red light district spanned four city blocks and was in operation from the 1890s until it was permanently shut down in 1941. One block of the district was previously the location that the Panton Leslie and Company headquarters had occupied from 1785 to 1848. The Panton Leslie site (8ES34) was excavated three times, in 1964, 1975, and 2000 to salvage remains of the trade headquarters. This study re-examines the archaeological collections resulting from the 1975 and 2000 excavations to interpret the daily lives and community interactions of red light district workers and their customers. Items such as medical paraphernalia, contraceptives, cosmetics, and personal items are examined. Results from this study indicate that Pensacola prostitutes suffered from a variety of diseases, used multiple means to avoid pregnancy, and interacted with the greater community more than previously imagined. Evidence from customers indicates that men from various backgrounds traveled both locally and from great distances to enjoy themselves in Pensacola's brothels.

Show moreThe increasing diversity in American public schools presents challenges to teachers and administrators. Current methods of reading instruction for English language learners (ELLs) have been ineffective to meet their needs in acquiring vocabulary. Meanwhile, the amount of time afforded ELLs to become proficient with grade-level vocabulary presents challenges for all stakeholders. Consequently, ELL students are not demonstrating growth on Florida's annual standards assessments. The purpose of this qualitative descriptive case study was to explore the vocabulary instruction used by elementary teachers of ELLs in the southeastern United States. The study's contextual framework comprised the five hypotheses of Krashen's second language acquisition theory: acquisition-learning, monitor, natural order, input, and affective filter. The research questions aligned with the theoretical framework and were the means used to identify strategies and describe instruction for ELLs. Nine purposefully selected participants provided rich descriptions of strategies and curricula used during vocabulary instruction to improve language acquisition. Research findings suggest the benefit of promoting partnerships among stakeholders to support vocabulary instruction for ELL students and the importance of continued professional development of vocabulary instruction strategies for staff. An unexpected finding was the value placed on using media for differentiated instruction of academic vocabulary with ELL students. The study provided information for policy and practice on the value of differentiated curriculum with an emphasis on ELLs' language acquisition needs. Future researchers could explore the use of auxiliary resources for ELL students, providing additional opportunities for differentiation in reading vocabulary instruction.

Constructed from my struggle for identity, bound up in these themes are a personal altar built on a foundation of love, hate, hurt, dreams, joy, and difference. Born into a racial society, America's Deep South, at a time when having a mulatto mother and black father mattered - a lot. It is the point-of-view of one who has traveled the world and understands that Other is a discourse of unequal power. Sympathetic to those with difference - especially the downtrodden, this collection takes the reader to the very heart of how this trifecta manifests itself in the voice of one "other."

"Voices of the Past in Lisbon" presents a mixed genre tribute to Lisbon, Portugal, through creative nonfiction, fiction, and poetry. The first piece, "Meeting Henry," is an essay about the author's encounter with Henry Fielding and Lisbon as experienced through Fielding's Journal of a Voyage to Lisbon. The author's experiences are juxtaposed with text from Voyage, giving Henry a chance to speak in the present. A poem entitled "Ode to Henry Fielding" is included in the essay. "Fresh Cut Tulips...

"Fresh Cut Tulips" is a fictional story situated in the British Cemetery, location of Henry Fielding's grave. Past residents of the British community in Lisbon share their lives through epitaphs. A poem of redemption, "When the Light Came In," fuses the past with the present on the site of Our Lady of the Carmo Hill. "Meeting Jose" is a short nonfiction story wherein linguistic bias is revealed and overcome. "Portrait of Lisbon" ties the previous pieces together in poetry and pays tribute to the city that is Lisbon.

One group included women who have eating disorders while the other included only women who do not. I also surveyed some of the broad trends in popular culture with reference to body sizes, shapes, and appearance in general. The data generated during this study suggest that women of all ages are vulnerable to the development of eating disorders. This vulnerability may be tied to a woman?s lack of voice or her childhood experiences and perceptions, as well as to the push for perfection dramatized through various media and centered on one standard of beauty: thinness.

Show moreWhen walking down the busiest streets in New Orleans, the word "Voodoo" can be seen everywhere. Voodoo is in the name of drugstores, bars, and even dishes in restaurants. Voodoo as a religion has been in existence in New Orleans for hundreds of years. However, Voodoo as a commodity of the city has developed more recently. This belief system not only serves many locals, but is also sold to many visitors to the city. Tourism is a reproduction of the concepts of a particular aspect of history or culture based on the perception of a group or groups. As is the case with most reproductions, tourist attractions are not exact replicas but rather interpretations of the events or cultures in question. This study examines how closely related these reproductions are to the original. Through the testimonials of both locals and tourists, the author illustrates the relationship between the visitors and practitioners, in order to illustrate the ambiguous line between imitative and authentic Voodoo. Even those who have practiced for years find it difficult to define the difference between real and performance. Ultimately, Voodoo belongs to the locals. It is a characteristic that helps define the city itself and gives New Orleanians a way to identify with the city in which they live.
