Lincoln was an ambitious lawyer and politician who worked long hours in order to further his career, and in doing so he encountered the same struggle that many fathers face: balancing a successful career with fulfilling the various roles that society assigns to fathers -- roles that most fathers actually desire to play in their childrens lives. That struggle was no less present in Lincoln's time than it is today. Indeed, far from being the detached and unemotional patriarchs often portrayed in books and movies, nineteenth century fathers craved emotional attachment with their children and desired to be intimately involved in their upbringing, even though that desire often competed with their own ambitions and career demands. Many historians have told the story of Lincoln the president, attempting to answer the question: "What kind of president was Abraham Lincoln?" No historian, however, has told the complete story of Lincoln the father, which asks and answers the question: "What kind of father was Abraham Lincoln?" This is that story.
