Abstract/Description
-
Aerial photo looking south over the Pensacola Lighthouse taken circa 1922. Construction on the lighthouse began in 1856 and it was first lit on January 1, 1859. A first-order Fresnel lens, cut and polished by Henri LePaute of Paris, France, was installed and lit by a single whale oil lamp. The lighthouse became automated in 1965 and the Keeper's Quarters now houses the Navy's Command Display Center which has exhibits pertaining to the history of the lighthouse and Naval Air Station.

Abstract/Description
-
Letter to Rear Admiral Daniel Ammen on the viability of using lard over sperm whale oil in ship lanterns as a cheaper, equally efficient substitute. Samples were sent aboard the U.S.S. "Canonicus" for the Bureau to test for itself. The paper is thin to the point of transparency and the pages of the ledger this letter was copied into appears in the upper right corners of each page. Parts of the paper have been eaten away by rust due to iron in the ink used.
